Snack and Story Time: ICE CREAM EVERYWHERE

by Marci Whitehurst As the last threads of summer weave into autumn, it’s fun to savor some of our favorite summer activities. Without question, one of our favorite activities is eating ICE CREAM! With so many different flavors and toppings, it’s a treat to be enjoyed by all. Of course, ice cream can be eaten all year long, but with the hottest temperatures of the year waning, we’re enjoying this cool treat with the last of our hot temps. Did you know that ice cream is eaten all over the world and can even be eaten at breakfast?! Plus, it has different names in a variety of countries. How do I know? I read a book, of course! Books take us on journeys—including ones with ice cream. READ : ICE CREAM EVERYWHERE: Sweet Stories from Around the World , by Judy Campbell-Smith, Illustrated by Lucy Semple. Gather with various cultures around the world as they celebrate sharing ice cream together—and the traditions surrounding this treat! DISCUSS : What is your favorite kind of ice cream? Why? W

Summer Challenge Sign-up and GIVEAWAY!

The Read, Discuss, Do! Summer Challenge is just over two weeks away, and we are celebrating with a GIVEAWAY for those who sign up to join the fun!

The Summer Challenge is perfect for parents, grandparents, caregivers, day care providers, and educators who will be spending time with kids this summer. It's not much different than what we do throughout the rest of the year: encourage you and the kids in your life to read a book, discuss the book, and do an activity related to the book! But with the Summer Challenge, we hope to inspire a little extra summery reading and fun!

How do you participate? Easy!

To participate "officially" and be eligible for the giveaway, you must:

  1. Comment on this post (scroll to the bottom and click "post a comment") indicating your intention to take on the Summer Challenge (be sure to fill out the Rafflecopter so we can contact you if you win). That's it!
Bonus stuff to do if you want to get all the fun you can out of this challenge:
  1. Download the square Summer Challenge graphic (at the top of this post) and share it on your blog or social media to help us spread the word.
  2. Subscribe to the Read, Discuss, Do! newsletter so you won't miss a theme.
  3. Share the fun on social media with the hashtag #RDDSummerChallenge.
  4. Download the printable Summer Challenge bookmarks. Kids can color them and even design one of their own. Perfect for marking their spot in all the books they'll be reading this summer!

You do NOT have to sign up in order to join in the fun. But you DO have to sign up in order to be eligible for the GIVEAWAY. What could you win? A copy of Rebecca J. Gomez's book Federico and the Wolf! Comment below (and fill out the Rafflecopter form) to enter!

We hope you will join the fun, which begins on June 3rd!

Oh, and one more thing. If you miss out on this giveaway, no worries. There will be another one at the end of the summer!
