Ten Reason Your Kids Should Participate in a Summer Reading Program

by Rebecca J. Gomez When my kids were young, summer reading programs were a sure thing. For the most part, my children were avid readers, especially my girls. A summer reading program wasn't necessary to encourage them to read, but we participated because it was a fun addition to summer. And the free pizza, books, and water park tickets definitely didn't hurt! There are lots of reasons to participate in a summer reading program or challenge, and here are ten of them: 1. Many summer reading programs offer prizes. And while we all know that reading is its own reward, some kids haven't figured that out yet. For those kids, a prize is just the incentive they need to stick their noses in a book now and then over the summer. 2. It's a fun way to reward those kids who will be reading no matter what! 3. For some families, trips to the library may help break up summer monotony.  4. Summer reading programs promote reading together as a family, especially for those with very young

Summer Challenge Sign-up and GIVEAWAY!

 The Read, Discuss, Do! Summer Challenge is just over two weeks away, and we are celebrating with a GIVEAWAY for those who sign up to join the fun!

The Summer Challenge is perfect for parents, grandparents, caregivers, day care providers, and educators who will be spending time with kids this summer. It's not much different than what we do throughout the rest of the year: encourage you and the kids in your life to read a book, discuss the book, and do an activity related to the book! But with the Summer Challenge, we hope to inspire a little extra summery reading and fun!

How do you participate? Easy! 

To participate "officially" and be eligible for the giveaway, you must:

  1. Comment on this post (scroll to the bottom and click "post a comment") indicating your intention to take on the Summer Challenge (be sure to fill out the Rafflecopter so we can contact you if you win). That's it!
Bonus stuff to do if you want to get all the fun you can out of this challenge:
  1. Download the square Summer Challenge graphic (at the top of this post) and share it on your blog or social media to help us spread the word.
  2. Subscribe to the Read, Discuss, Do! newsletter so you won't miss a theme. 
  3. Share the fun on social media with the hashtag #RDDSummerChallenge. 
  4. Download the printable Summer Challenge bookmarks. Kids can color them and even design one of their own. Perfect for marking their spot in all the books they'll be reading this summer!
