Ten Reason Your Kids Should Participate in a Summer Reading Program

by Rebecca J. Gomez When my kids were young, summer reading programs were a sure thing. For the most part, my children were avid readers, especially my girls. A summer reading program wasn't necessary to encourage them to read, but we participated because it was a fun addition to summer. And the free pizza, books, and water park tickets definitely didn't hurt! There are lots of reasons to participate in a summer reading program or challenge, and here are ten of them: 1. Many summer reading programs offer prizes. And while we all know that reading is its own reward, some kids haven't figured that out yet. For those kids, a prize is just the incentive they need to stick their noses in a book now and then over the summer. 2. It's a fun way to reward those kids who will be reading no matter what! 3. For some families, trips to the library may help break up summer monotony.  4. Summer reading programs promote reading together as a family, especially for those with very young

Coming Soon: Read, Discuss, Do! Summer Challenge

The Read, Discuss, Do! Summer Challenge is coming!

Do your kids complain about boredom over the summer? Would you like them to spend less time in front of screens and more time reading and having summer adventures? Are you looking for ideas to connect with your kids over the summer? Or perhaps you're a caregiver or educator looking for ways to mix things up and bring more summer fun into your summer daycares or classrooms. If so, the Read, Discuss, Do! Summer Challenge is for you! It's a fun, low-pressure way to prevent the "summer slide."

The Summer Challenge is not your typical summer reading program. There are no logs to fill in and no need to track the time spent reading or number of pages read. In other words, it's not meant to be like homework!

Last summer, we launched Read, Discuss, Do! with a challenge to get adults and the kids in their lives to read, discuss, and do more together by pairing books with discussion and activity ideas especially for the summer. We shared weekly themes, such as Play in the Dirt, Ice Cream, and Go Wild with Zoo Books!

This year, the Summer Challenge will cover ten weeks over the summer, from June 3 to August 5. Every Friday we will share broad themes, book recommendations, discussion topics, and ideas for activities to pair with the books. You can find the posts here on the blog, in our newsletter, and on our social media platforms: Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter

Watch for more information on how to officially participate and be eligible for giveaways, and be sure to sign up for our newsletter so you don't miss a thing!
