Five Treasures to be Found in Novels in Verse

By Marci Whitehurst Novels in verse are a hybrid form of storytelling. Novels in verse combine a complete narrative with the structure of poetry, bringing depth and richness to the beauty of stories.  Here are five treasures you’ll find in a novel in verse:  POETRY!  This treasure is obvious on every page of a novel in verse. Each page is a poem. The majority are free verse poems, meaning these poems don’t follow a particular meter, form, or rhythm. The poems can stand alone, but when each page of poetry is read from beginning to end, it weaves a full narrative to make a complete story. Check out this example from our own Rebecca J. Gomez’s forthcoming novel in verse:  Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published We call this car, Sandra’s white clunky car, a marshmallow with wheels. It’s riddled with dings and dents, and the rear driver’s side window is stuck stubbornly up and the tear in the vinyl seat pinches if you sit just wrong while wearing shorts

Coming Soon: Read, Discuss, Do! Summer Challenge

The Read, Discuss, Do! Summer Challenge is coming!

Do your kids complain about boredom over the summer? Would you like them to spend less time in front of screens and more time reading and having summer adventures? Are you looking for ideas to connect with your kids over the summer? Or perhaps you're a caregiver or educator looking for ways to mix things up and bring more summer fun into your summer daycares or classrooms. If so, the Read, Discuss, Do! Summer Challenge is for you! It's a fun, low-pressure way to prevent the "summer slide."

The Summer Challenge is not your typical summer reading program. There are no logs to fill in and no need to track the time spent reading or number of pages read. In other words, it's not meant to be like homework!

Last summer, we launched Read, Discuss, Do! with a challenge to get adults and the kids in their lives to read, discuss, and do more together by pairing books with discussion and activity ideas especially for the summer. We shared weekly themes, such as Play in the Dirt, Ice Cream, and Go Wild with Zoo Books!

This year, the Summer Challenge will cover ten weeks over the summer, from June 3 to August 5. Every Friday we will share broad themes, book recommendations, discussion topics, and ideas for activities to pair with the books. You can find the posts here on the blog, in our newsletter, and on our social media platforms: Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter

Watch for more information on how to officially participate and be eligible for giveaways, and be sure to sign up for our newsletter so you don't miss a thing!
